Hey! You should know that GoPro has released a newer version of this product: the GoPro HERO6 Black.
GoPro promised their best action camera yet -- and they certainly delivered with the GoPro Hero 5 and the addition of several new features.
The GoPro Hero 5 Black ditches the typical GoPro housing, waterproof to 33 feet without it. While not the first to include a touchscreen, it's the first Black flagship to feature one. With the touchscreen, the front button disappears and the entire camera is controlled through the top shutter button and the touchscreen. GoPro's iconic shape (and the front LCD) remains unchanged.
The 4K, paired with 12 megapixel stills, isn't new to GoPro, but now that includes image stabilization, a first for GoPro. Stills can also now be captured as the typical JPEG as well as the more advanced RAW files.
GoPro essentially started the action camera, and now they're adding a new but seemingly essential feature -- voice control. While there's no word yet on just how well it works, users can tell their GoPro to take a picture or start a recording to control the camera hands-free, which could be pretty essential for many types of action shots.
The GoPro Hero 5 Black is the manufacturer's best action camera yet, and proof it's not time to bail ship on the lineup. But, the competition is tighter than ever before. The Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 includes several sensors for recording your speed and route. The Sony X3000R has a 3x optical zoom. And the Nikon KeyMission 170 is waterproof down to 98 feet. The GoPro Hero 5 Black is still a good choice -- just not necessarily an easy one anymore.
